Lizophobia: Phobia of lizards

This phobia actually exists, and I thought I was suffering from it till I saw my hubby fretting over a tiny house lizard. They make me and everyone I know sick, but Anand is actually just not ready to face the crawly lizards. He will not share a space of 100 sq feet with these reptiles.

It was just last week that we were at our weekly cleaning chore, and there it was, a tiny reptile sitting on the sink. He just jumped and went out of the kitchen and was then not even ready to come near the kitchen. Poor me, I had to act brave and shove it away. I am already so fed up with these reptiles creeping in my house, behind the curtains, on the walls, in my kitchen. And this new generation that I am encountering now days don’t even buzz from their hiding place.

In India we believe that it brings bad luck to bring harm to the house lizards. This age old belief must have generated from the fact that they eat up the insects and flies. And I have some allergy to these reptiles. A few years ago one day I discovered a lizard inside my cupboard, even after getting all my clothes laundered, I couldn’t get over the sick feeling, and I developed some rashes. At least this taught me a lesson to always ensure that I closed my cupboard.

When we moved into our new house, I ensured that there was no hiding place for the cock-roaches and also the lizards. I also got a good bio-friendly pest control done. Believe me it was really effective although the pest control company had only guaranteed freedom from common insects and cock-roaches. I lived an insect and reptiles free six months before we moved to Singapore. Since Singapore is a tropical climate house lizards are found commonly enough to send any lizophobic like me completely paranoid.

Things that I have done to ward off the lizards:
1. Strategically placed some egg shells in my kitchen. This helps but only around the egg shells. May be I need to place some on the window sill.
2. No furniture is placed sticking to the wall, so that no room for them to hide. Very few except one or two pictures hanging on the wall.
3. I have started keeping the windows of my kitchen closed.

I am now trying to look for some pest control that might help keeping lizards at bay. I don’t even want to think of the glue trap. It’s the sight of these damn creatures that freaks me out. Have been trying to google for some help or tips, but nothing much there. Till then I hope these creepy crawly creatures don’t cross my sight.
