A Woman Who Loves Cats
There’s a woman near my place who is extremely fond of cats. She must be over 45. Every day religiously she comes down to the Pasir Ris Town Park on her cycle, laced with lots of carry bags. She stops her cycle at the usual place and then starts calling the cats something like mamini, mamini.. and all the cats come running to her. Mostly they keep waiting for her around the same time everyday.
I have been observing this woman for quite a few months. First I thought that it was one odd day when she thought she could feed the stray cats. You have many stray cats around Singapore. And they don’t buzz or run away if they encounter humans like in India. They walk and cross the roads as if they own the place.
Although I love cats and also had one as a pet but the cats here are a different story. Our cat was called Moni, something to do with her being too docile. Since dad was in army we kept changing many houses with his postings. In one such move we found Moni. Our neighbours told us that she belonged to the previous owners who were probably transferred. And when we moved to a new house she simply stayed back even after lots of effort to take her with us.
It is a common belief that dogs get attached to the people and cats get attached to the house. So, Moni was like a legacy of that house.
Okay thats about the flashback, coming to this cat loving woman, first time when I saw her at the park feeding the cats I thought she might have bought or made more than she could eat and what a nice way of making use of the left over food instead of simply throwing it off, like I am sure many of us do.
But, then I realized that she was feeding the cats everyday, it is around the same time that I am returning from office. It’s her routine to feed the cats and mine to catch the action daily.
It was amusing to see the cats running to her on seeing her riding down the park. There are many people who comment about her to other onlookers. Sometimes they are awed, sometimes surprised and somtimes just plain indifferent.
But I like this woman, and regularly there are around 3-4 cats who keep waiting for her. She brings small bowls and gives each of them separate bowls and the food is not left over food. They are the typical food you can buy from any pet shop. she really treats them like small kids and pampers them, watching over till they have finished. And then cleaning up after that. What a unique way to spend your time and money!

The woman who loves cat. Look how she is watching over the cat.

In this pic you can see her cycle with all the carry bags and cats enjoying the food.
This cat is too busy with the food.
PS: The pictures were taken on zoom, I thought it would be rude to take snaps just like that. And just because I wanted to share this with all of you, I clicked from a little distance. Little !!! Jhoot bolle kawwa kaate..
