Happy Diwali

Its Diwali time again and there’s no festivity around here. My friends tell me I should go to Little India to enjoy the festivity in Singapore. Little India is someplace we would rather avoid. Let me see, may be we do go there after all.

I have to also make some sweets. Have decided to make some besan laddoo and nariyal barfi. These sweets are really easy to make and delicious to taste. And there are a few diyas or candles to buy. Tomorrow morning we have to get freshly grated coconut for my nariyal barfi from the wet market.

I hope my sweets turn out well this year too. I am going to use my mother-in-laws recipes. Diwali is one time of the year that I enjoy the most. Every year towards evening we dress up in our most beautiful dress and get ready for the Laxmi Pujan all decked up in jewelleries. For the last couple of years, after Laxmi Pujan at home we make it a point to go for Puja to mom’s place and have dinner their with everyone.

This year I’ll be missing the Diwali get together at mom’s place where Urjit will be having a ball of a time with his mamu enjoying crackers. In his sherwani he would be looking so cute and smart.

I am missing the festive mood, the aroma of all the sweets, the smell of burnt crackers, the sound of fireworks, the shops and houses lit with lanterns and diyas, the smiles on the faces of everyone you meet, the fun at the work place, sharing of sweets, gifts. Everything.

The blessing and good wishes of family and friends is there to cheer us but we miss being with them. Memories of last year are fresh in my mind. I really should pamper myself to get over this depressing feeling. May be making the sweets will help some.

Wish you a Happy Diwali and a prosperous new year.
