Pownce! One more social-networking service

Just the way gmail made its entry by providing mailing service by invitations only, another site is making its advent into the market in the same way.

It’s called Pownce and is a social-networking service which allows file sharing along with messaging. For the time being only those with invitations are permitted to test the site. Bidding for invitations are already on eBay starting at 0.49 US$ and selling for as much as 10 US$. The caption says, “Pownce invite, be the envy of all your friends”

What eBay says about Pownce is “Pownce is the newest web phenomenon, to hit the web. The only way to get a pownce id is to get an invite or wait for the pownce team to get your name off the list. Here is your chance to get one now without the wait.” Nice stunt of hyping up a product and already proven success by gmail.

Text messages can be sent to individual friends or groups of friends on Pownce as well as post microblogs, or short announcements, to the larger Pownce community. Already many websites are providing messaging services and file sharing services individually, this one combines the best of both worlds.

It’s already being said that the file-sharing on the public site may lead to some copyright issues, and might be difficult to control, so it truly will pounce into your intellectual property. But, nothing to worry till you get the invite.
